Open Gardens 2021 - Garden of Eden

A garden in two parts. Complementing a small, brick 1940’s semi, the narrow front garden has lawn edged with sinuous herbaceous borders very fully stocked with colourful, wildlife-friendly mixed plantings including DigitalisEryngium, and Rudbeckia.  The fenced boundary has scramblimg Clematis, whilst the house has Boston ivy and climbing Hydrangea coverage.

The larger, rear family garden has sheds, vegetable beds, herbaceous and shrub borders and a deep pond with goldfish.  A recently added patio and garden room offer a much needed teen den/gin palace/gym for a maturing family.

A greenhouse holds an extensive collection of carnivorous and sub-tropical plants. Stephen has been growing carnivorous plants for about 45 years now and has a comprehensive collection, mainly focussed on Sarracenia pitcher plants which he hybridises, having produced and published several cultivars.  All plants are grown peat-free.

Open Gardens 2021 - Fasgadale House

Originally part of Sand Hutton Hall’s parkland, this garden was designed in the late 60s by John Brookes – an absolute thrill for the current owners, Geoffrey and Caroline Hall, to discover his plan, as he is one of their garden heroes. The Halls have lived here for 20 years, but the garden is very much still of Brookes’ ethos: a room outside that connects the house with the surrounding landscape. To quote his biography: showing “a confusion of tame and wild”. One of the new parts of the garden is Caroline’s collection of trees, inspired by her years of volunteering at the Arboretum.

Location: Hall Drive, Sand Hutton YO41 1LA
