A Year at The Arboretum.
Lu Mason began making rugs in the early 1980’s when she moved to York. Her interest started at a time when many people still had rag rugs in their homes, often made by older relatives who were passionate about making them and often had a tale to share about them!
Lu trained as an Occupational Therapist and enjoyed working in the profession. Then Covid happened and it was during lockdown, Lu received a request out of the blue to get out her tools to make a rag rug. This prompted her to ignite her love of making these rugs, using recycled clothes to provide a wealth of colour for her work.
Each rug is inspired by photographs from the arboretum and is made during the season it depicts. Capturing the changing light as the year has progressed has been a challenge Lu has enjoyed; as has trying to depict the play of light and shade.
